2020 Vision: Setting Intentions for your Best Year Yet
I’ve never been into New Year’s resolutions. I guess it’s because I don’t think you need a new year to change your life. Rather, life is a journey and everyday is an opportunity to evolve, grow, and make progress towards becoming the best version of ourselves. That said, I do think the start of the year is a good time to reflect, reset, and gain clarity on our intentions for the year (or even decade) ahead. There’s power in taking the opportunity to create clarity, set intentions, and pivot your plans going forward as necessary. Let go of old habits, obligations, and beliefs that aren’t moving you towards your dreams. Take this opportunity to clarify your priorities and celebrate your successes over the past year.
We watched a few movies as a family over the holidays. In fact, on NYE we watched a marathon of The Mandalorian which we all really enjoyed. (If you’re into Star Wars, I highly recommend it!) It was such a nice way to connect and enjoy time together. In developing your 2020 vision, I challenge you to have some fun and leverage a movie related theme.
Have you taken time to celebrate your accomplishments over the past year? What were the highlights of your 2019? It’s powerful to reflect back and witness how much you’ve accomplished and grown. If you were to nominate yourself for a Golden Globe or Academy Award, what would it be for? In other words– What have you done that you’re proud of? What obstacles did you overcome? What accomplishments/results did you achieve?
For this upcoming year, you get to be the writer, editor, director, and lead actor of your film. What’s your vision for 2020? What goals do you want to accomplish? How do you want to feel this year? Where do you want to be a year from now? What do you want to prioritize in the next 365 days? What do you want to give your time and attention to? What is your long term vision, and how do your plans for this year help you get there?
Music is a powerful way to elevate your mood and generate energy. Is there a soundtrack for your vision of 2020?
Live with Intention: Choose your word for 2020
Often times at the start of a yoga class, you’re invited to pick a word to set an intention for how you want to show up that day. Likewise, I invite you to choose a word that will ground you, remind you of your goals, and help you feel centered in 2020. What intention do you want to set for yourself in 2020? What word would serve as a reminder for how you want to live every day of this new year?
I brainstormed a list of potential words for my year, and decided that my word will be JOY. (My “subtitle” words are courage, passion and purpose.) It was a tough choice, but ultimately I want to make sure that I’m doing something everyday that brings me joy (even if it’s something small like enjoying dark chocolate, taking 5 minutes to connect with a friend, snuggling with my boys before bed, listening to music, etc.) And overall, I want to make sure that the path I’m choosing going forward brings me joy. Ultimately, I want 2020 to be the year where I take a stand for what makes me come alive. I’m shifting my career path forward because I feel a calling to serve others (passion & purpose), and I acknowledge that I will need to get out of my comfort zone (find courage) to be successful on my new path forward.
People who take the time to reflect on their achievements and get clear on what they want from the future, are the people who make things happen in life. Are you ready to live your best life in 2020? What’s your word? And do you have a preview trailer and soundtrack for the year?
Wishing you a thriveful 2020,
