Dr. Alan Christianson (@dralanchristianson) is a naturopathic endocrinologist focused on thyroid function, adrenal health, and metabolism.  He is the founding physician of Integrative Health in Scottsdale, Arizona.  I feel blessed to have found Dr. C many years ago while living in Scottsdale, and still maintain my relationship with Dr. C’s team.  When you find an amazing doctor who changes your life, you hold onto that relationship!  His data-driven and heart-centered approach is something that I really appreciate, and has proven results with his patients.

More recently, I was privileged to be a book ambassador for Dr. C’s newest book “The Metabolism Reset Diet”.   The MRD is a health book that empowers you to heal your liver and boost your metabolism.  The good news is that when your liver is healthy, you feel better and your energy will be more stable.  If you currently rely on caffeine to get through the day (and/or supplements to help you sleep at night), the MRD might be just what you need.  A side benefit is that your waist may shrink when your liver is working optimally!  After completing the 28 day protocol in January, I had more energy, slept better, and lost nearly 10 pounds.  I’m always looking for ways to optimize my health, and proactively manage my autoimmunity (Hashimotos)… and losing a few pounds was a nice side benefit.

  • What does your liver do?  You may just think of your liver as an organ damaged by alcohol.  But the truth is that it’s a powerful organ responsible for filtering & removing toxins, supporting digestion, and regulating hormones & blood sugar.
  • What is your metabolism and how is it linked to your liver? Your metabolism is simply how your body converts fuel into energy.  Our bodies constantly need energy but we only get fuel at meal times and never consume the exact amount of fuel that we need on a given day. The liver stores fuel from food you eat, and releases it gradually for energy when the body needs it.  When your liver is healthy, you are able to effectively store extra fuel from a meal.  When it’s not healthy, the fuel becomes trapped as fat in the liver or elsewhere in the body.  A clogged liver results in your body having a difficult time getting energy when needed, and also having a harder time breaking down stored body fat.
  • Do you have a clogged liver?  Indications that you may have a clogged liver include not feeling well when you miss meals, feeling ‘hangry’, brain fog, or having bad cravings for sweet food.   You may also experience intestinal bloating, especially later in the day.
  • Does an overloaded liver affect your health?  Yes!  An overloaded liver affects your metabolism, and makes your body unable to effectively burn fuel.  When you have an unhealthy liver, you tend to store fat (especially around your mid-section).

Did you know that your overall health is directly linked to the health of your liver, especially your energy, metabolism, and digestive health?  While I intuitively knew that my liver was important before reading this book, I didn’t fully realize that it is key for managing my overall wellness.  The great news is that your liver can regenerate itself, as your liver is always making new cells.  The problem is that if it’s too clogged with fat, the new cells won’t be any better for you than the old cells.   The MRD focuses on using resistant starch to detox and reset your liver in just 28 days.  The program is a temporary (not permanent) way of eating to kick-start your health.
